Kids' Outdoor Clothing

Equipping children for a fun and safe outdoor adventure starts with the proper clothing. Good kids outdoor clothing is designed to properly fit kids' unique body proportions and is made of rugged, but comfortable materials. Fun colors and cool designs also help ensure that kids will want to wear it. For winter outdoor activities, avoiding cotton is key. Layering is also key. Dressing kids with the minimum of a next-to-skin layer, a mid layer, and an outer shell will keep them warm and dry and allow for adjustments to changing weather conditions and activity level. The next-to-skin layer or long underwear eliminates cold air against the skin, provides some insulation, and wicks moisture away from the skin and out to the mid layer. The mid layer provides insulation and should be highly breathable so that moisture can quickly move through it to the outer layer. The outer layer may provide additional insulation, but most importantly it should have a shell that prevents moisture from getting in and allows moisture to get out. First Treks has focused primarily on the first two layers as we feel that those are often the most neglected when it comes to kids. Quality kids outer layer jackets and shells are readily available from a variety of sources. For more information read our article Dressing Kids For Warm and Comfortable Winter Adventures.
